Aside from the normal superstitions, there is a system that a lot of people follow when drafting for their NFL fantasy teams. In order to ensure that your team presents you with the best bang for your buck there are some drafting strategies you should follow to make sure your team will present you with the highest point totals - week in and week out.
First Ten Rounds: Your first round pick should almost always be a running back. There are one, maybe two, players at other positions who you could justify picking in the first round over a running back. However, the RB position is the most sought after and will have the greatest drop-off in production amongst the first and second tier talent. Quarterbacks and wide receivers often have quality players available much later in the draft. In fact, the first ten rounds should solely be dedicated to the main four offensive positions: QB, RB, WR, and TE.
Final Rounds: The final rounds should be devoted to kicker, defense, and some sleepers or back-ups. There's not that big of a difference between the top ten kickers - so you can generally wait as long as the last round to draft a kicker. Defense varies depending on whether you have individual players or defensive teams. Teams are usually chosen around the last couple rounds. You don't want to jump too early, but you don't want to be left with a team with no defense. Individual defensive players should always be picked based on tackles and sacks. Just look at last years numbers and who had the most of each category. Usually that will provide you a winning formula. And finally, you might want to use a couple final picks on sleepers or players who are back-ups for oft injured starters. You could hit paydirt on these players, and if you don't need them, they could become tradeable!
This formula will often provide you with the best results for a well-rounded fantasy team. You can't predict injuries and slumps, but these are usually the best ways to fill holes!
